About Kanekes Community

The people of Kanekes is a Sundanese community in Lebak, Banten. Their population of about 5,000 to 8,000 people, and they constitute one of the tribes who apply insulation from the outside world. The outside people of community usually call them Baduy people, they themselves prefer to call themselves as people of Kanekes in accordance with the name of their territory.
In bevel of Mountain of Kendeng at Banten Province they live. The society life which is cultivation still naturally and traditional, for inner of Kanekes they refuse all influence from outside they don’t care with technology, education and all life style from outside. But for outside of Kanekes they have recognized the technology, like electronic equipments, though its use remain to represent the interdict for all citizen Kanekes, inclusive of external citizen of Kanekes. They use the equipments by stealth to be knowing by supervisor from inner of Kanekes.
Their belief is Sunda Wiwitan, they do not know the school and letter which they recognize is Aksara Hanacara and its language is Sunda, to differentiate the people Kanekes inner and people Kanekes is outside we can seen from clothes which they wear everyday. Individuality of inner people of Kanekes clothes is white and is dark blue and also white headband. They is prohibited traditionally to come in contact with the foreigner people. (Non Indonesian), for outer of Kanekes they dress is black and also use black headband.
Kanekes society in general is divided into three groups: tangtu, panamping, and dangka. Tangtu group is a group known as of Kanekes inner, which most closely follow the custom, namely residents living in three villages: Cibeo, Cikertawana, and Cikeusik. The second community group called Panamping are those known as Kanekes Outer (Outer Baduy), who lived in different villages scattered around the region Kanekes in, like Cikadu, Kaduketuk, Kadukolot, Gajeboh, Cisagu, and others. Society of Foreign Kanekes distinctively dressed and black headband.
Kanekes Dangka live outside the area, and currently resides in the remaining two villages, namely Padawaras (Cibengkung) and Sirahdayeuh (Cihandam). Dangka village serves as a sort of buffer zone of influence from outside.
Their work everyday is society Kanekes is farm the paddy huma. Others they also get the perquisite from selling fruits which they get in the forest like Durian and sour of Koranji, and also honey from the forest.  Apart from farming them also make and selling as Koja and Jarog (made bag from bark), brown sugar, jacquards in the form of shawl, clothes, pants, headband, dagger, big knife, and hunt.
Kanekes community know of two systems of government, namely national system, which follows the rules of the state of Indonesia, and custom systems that follow the customs of the public trust. Both systems are combined or acculturated  such a way that no collisions occur. Nationally, the population Kanekes led by the village head called Jaro Pamarentah, which is under the sub-district, while customarily subject to the highest Kanekes traditional leaders, namely Pu'un.
